Embracing Gandhi's Legacy

My dear friends, parents, staff and students,
Greetings for the month of October.
The new month reminds us of so many inspiring events, starting from Gandhi Jayanthi. This day is significant for honouring Gandhi’s life and principles, promoting his ideals of non-violence and civil disobedience, and advocating for peaceful resistance. It has international relevance and inspires movements for social change. Educational programs and activities are organised to educate people about Gandhi’s life. It’s a day to reflect upon his life, sacrifices, and unwavering dedication to the cause of India’s independence.

It challenges us to promote Gandhian ideals. His principles of non-violence, truth, and civil disobedience are more relevant than ever in a world grappling with conflicts and violence. It is a reminder to uphold these ideals in our personal and societal lives. It has an International relevance. His influence transcends borders and his methodology and teachings inspire numerous civil rights and freedom movements across the globe.

The American civil rights movement led by Martin Luther King, Jr. is one example. It advocates peaceful resistance. Gandhi Jayanti serves as a reminder that change and even revolutions can be achieved through peaceful means. His approach to a non-violent resistance continues to inspire movements for justice and social change.

As we celebrate Gandhi Jayanti, let us draw inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi’s remarkable life and teachings. His principles of non-violence, truth and justice are just as relevant today as they were during India’s struggle for independence. The key takeaways from Gandhi’s life are:

• Be the change you wish to see in the world: Gandhi’s life is a testament to the incredible impact one person can have on the course of history.
• Lead with compassion and empathy: Gandhi’s philosophy of ahimsa (non-violence) emphasises the importance of treating all living beings with kindness and respect.
• Stand up for what’s right: Gandhi’s unwavering commitment to truth and justice is a powerful reminder to stand up against injustice and fight for what’s right.
It challenges us to apply Gandhi’s principles in daily life but it can be done in the following ways:
• Practice self-reflection: Take time to introspect and evaluate your actions and their impact on others.

• Embrace simplicity: Live a simple life, free from unnecessary desires and clutter.
• Cultivate empathy: Put yourself in others’ shoes and try to understand their perspectives.
Let’s keep Gandhi’s legacy alive. As we commemorate Gandhi Jayanti, let us recommit ourselves to his values and strive to create a more compassionate, just, and peaceful world. Remember, every small action counts, and collective efforts can lead to significant positive changes.
I wish you all a successful month, walking in his footsteps. Thus, we live Don Bosco’s maxim in his formation of the poorest young people: Forming young people to be ‘honest citizens and good Christians (Religious people)’. God bless you all

With love and God’s blessings,
